The journey from Haryana, India to Oregon, USA, has been nothing short of transformative. As a PhD student at the University of Oregon, I have had the opportunity to immerse myself in a new academic environment, surrounded by inspiring scholars and diverse perspectives. This blog explores my experiences as a PhD student in Oregon and highlights the cultural and academic differences that have enriched my journey. The University of Oregon, located in Eugene, is renowned for its vibrant academic community and picturesque campus. The Department of History, where I am pursuing my doctoral studies, offers a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. Under the guidance of Dr. Arafaat Valiani, my research has taken a renewed focus on British colonial India, exploring the intricate dynamics between colonial and post-colonial states and their interactions with indigenous communities.

One of the most striking aspects of studying in Oregon is the emphasis on interdisciplinary research. The university encourages students to explore connections between different fields of study, fostering a holistic approach to academic inquiry. This has allowed me to incorporate insights from anthropology, sociology, and political science into my historical research, enriching my understanding of the subject matter. The academic culture at the University of Oregon is characterized by a strong emphasis on collaboration and dialogue. Seminars and workshops are integral components of the academic experience, providing platforms for students and faculty to engage in meaningful discussions. These interactions have not only broadened my academic horizons but also helped me develop critical thinking and analytical skills. Culturally, living in Oregon has been an eye-opening experience. Eugene, with its vibrant arts scene, diverse culinary offerings, and outdoor recreational opportunities, offers a unique blend of urban and natural attractions. The community is welcoming and inclusive, making it easy for international students to feel at home.

  • One of the highlights of my time in Oregon has been exploring the state’s natural beauty. From the stunning coastline of the Pacific Ocean to the majestic peaks of the Cascade Range, Oregon’s landscapes are a nature lover’s paradise.
  • Weekend hikes, trips to the coast, and visits to national parks have provided much-needed respite from academic rigors and offered opportunities for reflection and rejuvenation.

Moreover, the cultural diversity in Oregon has enriched my personal and academic experiences. Interacting with students and faculty from different cultural backgrounds has broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for diverse viewpoints. The university’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity is evident in its various cultural events and initiatives, which celebrate the rich tapestry of global cultures. my journey from Haryana to Oregon has been a journey of immense learning and discovery. The academic and cultural experiences at the University of Oregon have not only advanced my research but also shaped my personal growth.
