This transition, marked by cultural, academic, and personal growth, has been both challenging and rewarding. In this blog, I share my experiences of moving from Rajasthan to Oregon, highlighting the contrasts and connections that have shaped my journey. Rajasthan, with its rich history and vibrant culture, has always been home to me. The state’s historical significance, architectural marvels, and cultural heritage have profoundly influenced my academic pursuits. My educational journey began in Haryana, where I completed my Bachelor of Science degree. It was during my Master’s in History at the University of Rajasthan that I developed a deep interest in historical research, particularly in British colonial India and its impact on indigenous communities.
My Decision to go out of India
The decision to pursue a PhD at the University of Oregon was driven by my desire to broaden my academic horizons and engage with new perspectives. The University of Oregon, known for its strong emphasis on interdisciplinary research, provided the ideal environment for my doctoral studies. Under the mentorship of Dr. Arafaat Valiani, my research has taken a renewed focus on the interactions between colonial and post-colonial states and indigenous communities in British colonial India.
The transition from Rajasthan to Oregon has been marked by significant cultural and academic differences. Academically, the University of Oregon offers a collaborative and dialogue-driven environment. The emphasis on interdisciplinary research has allowed me to incorporate insights from various fields into my historical studies, enriching my understanding of the subject matter. Culturally, living in Oregon has been a unique experience. Eugene, with its diverse community and vibrant arts scene, offers a stark contrast to the traditional and historic ambiance of Rajasthan. The inclusive and welcoming nature of the community has made it easier to adapt to this new environment. Exploring Oregon’s natural beauty, from its stunning coastline to the majestic mountains, has provided a refreshing change from the arid landscapes of Rajasthan. The journey from Rajasthan to Oregon has also been a journey of personal growth. Living in a different country, adapting to a new academic system, and interacting with people from diverse cultural backgrounds have broadened my perspective and enriched my life experiences. The University of Oregon’s commitment to inclusivity and diversity has provided numerous opportunities to engage with different cultures and viewpoints, enhancing my understanding and appreciation of global diversity. Moreover, this journey has underscored the importance of resilience and adaptability. Moving away from home, navigating the challenges of a new academic system, and building a new support network have been daunting yet fulfilling experiences. These challenges have strengthened my resolve and adaptability, preparing me for future endeavors.
